Admissions Policy 12/13
Admission Policy 2012/2013
The Ockendon Academy is a DFE designated Mathematics/Computing College and Training School. The school’s Pupil Admission Number for September 2012 is 180.
If there are no more requests for places at the school than the published admission number it can admit, then the school is able to agree to all requests. Where there are more applicants than places, the school is required to have criteria for deciding which requests have priority. These form the school’s Admissions Policy, which is published annually on Thurrock Council’s website and in the booklet Secondary Education in Thurrock.
The criteria are set out below in priority order
1. Children in Public Care will automatically be given first consideration above all categories of priority. (This is a child who is in the care of a Local Authority or provided with accommodation by that authority – see section 22 of the Children act 1989)
2. Students whose normal place of residence is in the catchment area of the school at the date of application and admission.
3. Students whose normal place of residence is outside the catchment area of the school at the date of application and admission.
Students with a sibling attending the school at the date of application and admission are first priority in two and three above.
Distance Measurement
Distance from home to school (measured in a straight-line in metres by a digital mapping system) will be used to allocate places. Students living nearer to the school being given higher priority. The straight-line distance measurement is taken from the address point
of the home address to the main school gate. (In the case of flats measurement will be to the main entrance door of the building).
Sibling Details
• For the purpose of allocating places, the following will be classified as siblings:
• Full siblings living at the same address.
• Step siblings living at the same address.
• Half siblings living at the same address.
• Long-term foster siblings living at the same address.
• At the date of application and admission as student who attends the school in any year group, excluding the final year.
Twins, Multiple Births or Same Distance Measurement
If more than one student is entitled to the last place in a year group,
(As in the case of twins/multiple births or same distance measurement), the school will offer a place to the additional student(s).
Special Education Needs
Children with a statement of special education needs are allocated school places under different regulations and will override all other categories of priority.
Waiting Lists
In the event of over subscription Thurrock Council will maintain a waiting list.
Students on the list will be ranked in order of priority for admissions irrespective of the date of application using the criteria stated above. Placement on the waiting list does not affect parents’ right to appeal against an unsuccessful application.
