The Academy has excellent facilities. Each specialist subject area has its own suite of rooms:
- There are carpeted, fully equipped sets of classrooms for mathematics, history, geography, religious education and modern languages.
- A new modern block has been built to accommodate the English teaching department, with eight new classrooms.
- The Technology Centre has three workshops, a design studio, three art rooms (refurbished and extended in 2014), two food technology and one textiles room.
- Ten science laboratories.
- A drama studio, a large resources area, a music room, eight practice rooms and a fully equipped sound recording studio.
- There are seven fully equipped information technology suites.
The Academy has in recent years completed an exciting £8 million re-development including a new hall, a fitness suite and new changing rooms for the swimming pool and a fully furnished 10 classroom Studio School and Sixth Form centre.
In the area of physical education and sport the Academy has unrivalled facilities, with a large sports hall suitable for badminton, basketball, indoor cricket, short tennis and many other games. We also have a well-equipped fitness suite. The Academy is very fortunate to have its own heated indoor swimming pool which has undergone a £400,000 face lift. All these facilities are set within eleven and a half acres of playing fields.
We are justly proud of our site and buildings. The front of the Academy has been expanded in recent years to improve the Reception area and increase the office space available, providing a comfortable, clean, light and airy working environment, which is treated with respect by students and staff. The classrooms above have also benefited from the increase in size and are now even more spacious. Further improvements are planned and include extending mathematics and science in order to incorporate ever increasing numbers.
Opened in September 2013, the new building for Ockendon Studio School, a school and sixth form within the Academy, provides teaching rooms which are spacious, utilise natural light and are equipped with the latest technology. The building is furnished to a high specification to mirror the workplace and includes a boardroom for business meetings. A large open-plan Business Centre provides space for private study, communication, project work, networking and dining.
Learning Resources Centre
The Ockendon Academy’s LRC (Learning Resource Centre) is an up-to-date School Library fully equipped with modern up-to-date computers, connected to the School Network.
The LRC is open to students throughout the school day, during morning and afternoon breaks as well as after school. The LRC is used frequently during lessons and in Year 7 students receive a lesson to help them find their way around the Library and the way which books are filed using the Melvil Dewey Decimal Classification system (used in the majority of public libraries).
The LRC is a fun place to be, bordering the quadrangle, where students can sit and read, work or use computers under the watchful eyes of birds in the large-scale avery (including chickens and ducks) and fish in the pond.
